Student Nutrition Campaign Plans Conference to Discuss the Future of Toronto’s School Cafeterias

teensMy Food My Way, a Toronto-based student nutrition campaign, is organizing the Student Ambassadors Conference to develop a strategy for revitalizing school cafeterias and improving young people’s eating habits.

The full-day event has been scheduled for April 2014 and will be held at Metro Hall in downtown Toronto. My Food My Way is planning to invite approximately 300 students and 50 teachers from middle and secondary schools across the GTA.

The Student Ambassador Conference will serve as a large-scale forum to openly discuss the cafeteria experience, identify specific problems, and begin developing viable solutions. The goal is to compile a report that can be shared with the Toronto District School Board Chair and Director of Education.

“My Food My Way implemented its Student Ambassador Program so that students can take ownership of the campaign and initiate meaningful and relevant changes,” said John Weatherup, President of the Toronto Education Workers (TEW).

The TEW is the union spearheading the My Food My Way campaign jointly with the Toronto District School Board as part of their Healthy Learning Healthy Living initiative. The campaign continues in its goal to “change the culture of food in Toronto’s homes, schools, and communities.”

In the summer of 2013, My Food My Way worked with student ambassadors from Thistletown Collegiate to redesign the students’ cafeteria experience. The pilot project involved “design thinking” sessions and workshops with renowned chef Susur Lee, and saw the implementation of several student recommendations in the fall.

“We want to empower young people to lead these positive changes and ultimately be the ones to redefine the nutritional landscape for subsequent generations,” stated Tyler Johnson, who is coordinating community outreach for the My Food My Way campaign.
